  4. Report on Investigations of Crop Circles
  5. in the Area of Strathclair, Manitoba
  6.

  10.      Following media reports about several new crop circles in
  11. western Manitoba, NAICCR representatives travelled to the area
  12. for onsite investigations.
  13.  
  14.      Five crop formations were discovered, one of which was
  15. easily explained as lodging.  Of the other four, three were in
  16. the shape of the symbol for Mars: a circle with an attached arrow. 
  17. Two were alongside a major highway, while the others were
  18. next to less-travelled farm roads.  The two near the major
  19. highway were apparently made on the night of 14-15 August 1992.  
  20.  
  21.      Rumours of the circles spread through the community, and
  22. many people went to see the formations.  By Monday, 17 August
  23. 1992, an estimated 200 people had visited the sites.  News media
  24. mentioned the sites in newscasts on 17-18 August, but the
  25. formations did not attract the wide publicity that other, less
  26. impressive and explainable formations had garnered a month
  27. earlier.  NAICCR investigators were able to visit the sites on 18
  28. August 1992, after a four-hour excursion from Winnipeg.
  29.  
  30.      Wheat and soil samples were taken from all sites.  Mapping
  31. was done, though, because of excessive trampling of the
  32. formations, measurement errors of about six inches were possible. 
  33. Compasses were employed, but no magnetic anomalies were detected. 
  34. Both VHF and AM/FM radios were tested, but no interference was
  35. detected.  Tape recordings taken at the sites were unaffected. 
  36. No unusual sounds were heard, and no unusual "feelings" were
  37. sensed.  Insects were present in normal quantities at the sites. 
  38. According to residents, animals were not afraid to enter the
  39. areas.

  41.      At one formation, two youths guarded the entrance and
  42. brandished a sign reading: "A Loonie a Look"; they charged a
  43. dollar to anyone wanting to enter the site. [Note: "loonie" is a slang
  44. term for a Canadian dollar coin.]
  45.  
  46.      At Strathclair No.4, two NAICCR investigators decided to try
  47. an experiment in circle creation.  They walked between the rows
  48. of wheat into an unaffected area and began walking around in a
  49. circle.  After five minutes, they had produced a circle of
  50. comparable size to Strathclair No.4.  The new circle was swirled
  51. and flattened, and examination of wheat stalks showed no breakage
  52. whatsoever.  The stalks were only gently bent at a height of
  53. about one to two inches above the ground, and did not appear to
  54. have been subjected to any force.  The appearance of the new
  55. circle was relatively "messy", but after a few minutes of "touch-
  56. ups", it began to look more like the "real" circle.  Suggestions
  57. were offered as to ways in which more even flattening could be
  58. produced.  Since Strathclair No.4 was created on the night of 14-
  59. 15 August 1992, only a few days after full Moon, it was proposed
  60. that a hoaxer could easily have created the formation without any
  61. flashlights and ducked down below the level of the five-foot-high
  62. wheat when an occasional car passed by.
  63.  
  64.      The hoax theory is complicated by a CE1 UFO
  65. sighting over the field where the Ipswich formation was
  66. discovered.  One close witness and two other witnesses observed
  67. an unusual object moving over the field and then fly away on the
  68. night that that formation was likely created.
  69.  
  70.      On the night of 14 August, a television program about crop
  71. circles had been aired.  Residents of the area had recalled
  72. seeing the episode.  However, at least two of the formations had
  73. been discovered before the program was aired.  It is not thought
  74. that the television program had necessarily precipitated the later 
  75. formations.
  76.  
  77.      Wheat samples will be given to several researchers for
  78. testing.  As some cerealogists have claimed that seeds from
  79. plants inside circles grow faster/better than those from a
  80. control sample, double-blind tests of this theory will be
  81. performed.  Further investigations are continuing.

  92. A circle of flattened wheat was discovered in a field southwest
  93. of Strathclair.  It was 28 feet in diameter.  The wheat was
  94. flattened and swirled in a counterclockwise direction.  The
  95. circle was approximately 40 feet from a municipal road.

  101. visitors during the interim.

  109. A flattened area of wheat in the shape of the symbol for Mars was
  110. discovered in a field southwest of Strathclair.  The main
  111. circle was 28 feet in diameter, with no detectable eccentricity. 
  112. The wheat was flattened and swirled in a counterclockwise
  113. direction.  The formation was approximately 40 feet from a
  114. municipal road, directly opposite a circle which had been
  115. discovered a week earlier. 
  116.  
  117. In the arrow, the wheat was flattened away from the circle,
  118. following the lines of the arrow.  The arrow pointed away from
  119. the circle on a bearing of 260 degrees.  The arrow was 18.5 feet in
  120. length, with left and right arms of 6 and 6.5 feet in length,
  121. respectively.  The width of the arrow was approximately 36
  122. inches. The arrow pointed almost directly away from the road.

  135. A flattened area of wheat in the shape of the symbol for Mars was
  136. discovered in a field just east of Ipswich.  The main area
  137. was 26 feet in diameter along its major axis and 24.5 feet along
  138. its minor axis.  The wheat was flattened and swirled in a
  139. counterclockwise direction.  
  140.  
  141. In the arrow, the wheat was flattened away from the circle,
  142. following the lines of the arrow.  The arrow pointed away from
  143. the main area on a bearing of 65 degrees. The arrow was 17.5 feet in
  144. length, with left and right arms 7.5 and 11 feet in length,
  145. respectively.  The width of the arrow corridor was 28 inches. 
  146. The arrow pointed toward a farm road, its tip being only 36 feet
  147. from the road.

  163. A flattened area was found in a wheat field near other crop
  164. circle UGMs.  It was roughly 20 feet in diameter.  Wheat was laid
  165. down in random clumps, and some sections had rebounded upright. 
  166. The area was visible from a nearby road.  Examination suggested
  167. the area was caused by lodging.

  184. direction.  The formation was approximately 100 feet from a
  185. provincial highway.

  188. following the lines of the arrow.  The arrow pointed away from
  189. the circle on a bearing of 120 degrees.  The arrow was 16 feet in
  190. length, with left and right arms of 8.5 and 10 feet in length,
  191. respectively.  The width of the arrow was approximately 66
  192. inches. The arrow pointed away from the road.

  205. A television station received an anonymous call that a crop
  206. circle had been found on the property of the Brandon airport.

  215. It was reported that a crop circle was discovered in a field of
  216. oats.  The circle is perfectly round and 32 feet in diameter. 
  217. The oats are flattened and swirled in a clockwise direction.  The
  218. center of the circle is devoid of vegetation.
  219.  
  220. The circle was found "in mid-summer".  It was reported to NAICCR
  221. on 21 August 1992.

  231. A woman was driving east from Shoal Lake to Strathclair when she
  232. saw a pair of bright yellow lights over a field to her left.  The
  233. lights appeared to be about 50 to 100 feet above the ground.  She
  234. stopped her car to get a better look, and watched as the lights
  235. moved in tandem, one above the other, progressing over the field
  236. heading west.  As it was not quite dark, she was sure that she
  237. could see a dark object behind the lights, with another very
  238. small flashing light at its "tail".  
  239.  
  240. The witness' daughter and son-in-law were following in their own
  241. car, and they also saw the object before it moved out of view
  242. behind some trees.  The object was visible for about two minutes
  243. as it progressed slowly over the field.  No noise was heard.
  244.  
  245. Reported to the media on 15 August 1992.

  247. The next day, a crop circle UGM was discovered in the wheat field

  278. A witness reported a bright green object, "like an airplane going
  279. to crash".  The object was rapidly moving from the west to the
  280. east, but looked like it was "going up".  The object had a "long
  281. tail".  It appeared to be over the Winnipeg airport.  It was
  282. visible for only a few seconds.
